A generation after the Guild's fall, an outcast young nomad uncovers a sinister web of intrigue in Mithgar's post-Cataclysm deserts. Caught in the machinations of a shadowy scheming sage, a vengeful race bent on global reconquest, and the ruthless priests of an exiled god, his fate intertwines with an unlikely band of allies. The journey challenges his concepts of family and loyalty, leading him to realize that even if he needs no one, there are others who need him.

Xander Sykes' simple nomadic life descends into chaos when he is exiled for harboring a forbidden secret. Xander wields nexism: the rare power to affect reality by will alone. Unable to hide the young man's growing gift from the tribe, Xander's father banishes him to a remote desert town. On his way into exile, Xander's caravan is lost under mysterious circumstances, leaving him stranded in a cataclysm-scarred wasteland.

Banding together with Dawn Gen shaman Jarsaal Mailsar, Light Gen emissary Damus Greystone, his guardian malakh Nail, and enigmatic Master Steersman Arcanadeus, the young nomad learns that the divine fire which destroyed his father's world has awakened ancient horrors and birthed perilous new wonders.

Xander's pursuit of his lost tribe leads him through the ruins of the Guild, whose hubris continues to threaten the world long after their demise. Braving the ruins of a dead metropolis brings Xander into contact with Astlin Tremore: a young woman subjected to the Guild's worst cruelties and sought by the death god Shaiel. Mentored by Szodrin: a defector from the militaristic Night Gen, Xander discerns a connection to Astlin that transcends the nexic gifts they share, and which make her potentially more dangerous than the relentless fiends that hunt her.

The necticists join a diverse conspiracy including Tefler: a secret devotee of Thera within Shaiel's ranks, his friend and scholarly cook known only as Thunk, and an amnesiac transessed Gen named Zan. The comrades face demonic opposition, betrayal, and death while aiding cursed priest Sulaiman Iason's quest to prevent the Cataclysm by preemptively slaying the gods who caused it.

Can Xander tame his inner power and rally his eclectic allies? And is even their combined strength enough to avert a looming cosmic upheaval that could echo throughout eternity?
